In the classroom, student agency and voice can be powerful in a variety of ways. One source claims that giving kids a voice in classroom decisions helps foster participation and a strong feeling of community. It is essential to elevate student voices for a variety of reasons. One reason is that, according to Douglas Fisher and Nancy Frey, "student achievement is correlated with the amount of talk that they do." Teachers can employ several tactics to empower student voices, which can improve relationships, create a feeling of community, boost involvement, and provide valuable insights for their lessons. To name a few, these are:

Start the class with a welcoming ritual: Students can talk to the class, in small groups, or in pairs about "breaking news" or "what's on your mind." Students can let go of their most pressing worries during this welcoming rite, making room for fresh experiences. As students open to one another and share a little part of themselves, it also strengthens bonds among students. As the classroom transforms into a space that accepts students for who they are as well as where they are at any given time, welcoming rituals help students feel like they belong.

Plan/Arrange Regular opportunities for Student Voice: Prioritise student voice and active engagement during the planning phase by considering the following questions: When will students work together to solve problems, come up with more complex questions, help create a product, or engage in any other kind of active learning? How frequently do teachers give students the chance to write on the board, give speeches in front of the class, or use the document camera to do demonstrations?

Utilise Technology to Boost Student Voice: Students' voices can be powerfully boosted by technology. Teachers can, for instance, encourage students to contribute their ideas and opinions by using online discussion forums. They can also help with collaborative writing assignments by using digital tools like Google Docs.

Promote Student-Led Conferences: These events are an excellent means of empowering students and giving them a say in the education they receive. Students take the initiative to talk with their parents and teachers about their objectives, difficulties, and successes at these conferences.

Give students the option to choose: Providing students with options for what they study and how they study it can be a potent method to support their agency and sense of voice. For instance, teachers can provide students with a choice of activities for a certain lesson or subjects for a research project.

These are but a few ways that teachers can encourage student agency and voice in the classroom. They can encourage students to feel more connected, involved, and in ownership of their own education by doing so.
